At Mapleseed Firewood, we’re excited to announce some big updates: new stock, redesigned firewood bags, a refreshed website, and a more efficient delivery system to serve you better. In this blog post, we’ll take you behind the scenes to explain the thought process behind these changes and what you can expect from our upgraded service.

Learning and growing through the pandemic

Like many businesses, the pandemic gave us time to reflect and improve. During this period, we paused our firewood sales to focus on optimizing our operations. Our goal was simple but ambitious: to enhance our product quality and delivery experience by applying the lessons we’ve learned over the years.

We identified two key areas of improvement:

1. Increase the amount of firewood per bag
2. Simplify the handling and delivery process

More Firewood, more efficiency: 2.46 Bags = Cord

Our first priority was to increase the amount of firewood we could fit into each bag. We found a taller, better-ventilated bag design and built a custom machine to fill these bags more efficiently. After extensive testing, we’re proud to share that our new machine allows us to pack 20% more firewood into each bag.

This means fewer bags are needed to reach a full cord—now just 2.46 bags compared to the 5 bags required previously. The larger, more stable bags also maintain their shape better, making them easier to transport and store.

Smoother, more convenient delivery

In the past, we used a boom crane to deliver our firewood, which worked well in some cases but was less effective when customers needed delivery in harder-to-reach areas like inside a garage. The crane setup also took time, adding inefficiencies to the process.

To address this, we’ve switched to using an electric pallet jack. This versatile tool can navigate rough terrain, gravel driveways, and even cross the threshold into your garage. It enables our drivers to place the firewood bags exactly where you need them—right in the spot where you’d normally stack your firewood. In fact, the new bags are so convenient that you can use the wood directly from them, eliminating the need to stack it altogether.

Streamlined offerings

While these improvements have helped us offset some of the rising logistics costs, we’ve also streamlined our product offerings to increase efficiency further. For now, we’re offering firewood in just one size: 14-inch logs.

We chose 14 inches because it offers the most flexibility. Customers who are accustomed to burning 16-inch logs will notice only a slight difference, while many smaller fireplaces actually require shorter logs. Unfortunately, for those who need 12-inch logs, we’re unable to offer that size at the moment due to limited demand. However, if there’s enough interest in the future, we’d be happy to explore the possibility of bringing it back. If that’s something you’d like to see, let us know!
